Working Together Innovation Initiative - Maternal and Child Health and the South East Family Services Alliance. The Cities of Casey and Greater Dandenong and the Shire of Cardinia. A collaborative partnership between three southern region councils and the South East Family Services Alliance, has paved the way to improved access and participation levels in early childhood programs in Melbourne’s south east. Recognition that vulnerable children and families at- risk were not readily accessing support services as well as they could, prompted a early childhood pilot project initiated by the South East Family Services Alliance. With support from Council maternal and child health services, the project sought to address the disadvantage of vulnerable young children by increasing awareness, referral and participation levels in local early years services. Key to the project was building the capacity of professionals to work with young children and foster links between Child FIRST, Family Services and early childhood stakeholders. The approach is collaborative and targeted, with appropriate referrals achieving the project’s accessibility objectives across the three local government areas involved. There is also an increase in the number of vulnerable children receiving developmental checks, and ongoing participation in services across the region. Mahogany Rise Child and Family Centre - A Journey to Access and Inclusion. Frankston City Council. Yarra Ranges Best Start partnered with Connections Uniting. Care Music Therapy. The model was tailored to the needs of the community, with sessions individualised and held where families were isolated or vulnerable. Parents are referred to the program by their Maternal and Child Health nurse. The three- step program involves home visits that occur before and after a full day- stay experience in Maroondah's purpose built facility. It offers practical support to parents experiencing difficulties settling their babies and supports positive routines for play, feeding, care, infant attachment and maternal health. In planning the program, Council sought to better engage with families from refugee backgrounds and vulnerable families. The combination of home visiting and centre based day- stay has built relationships with families and increased the level of ongoing engagement with the maternal and child health service - especially by refugee families. Evaluation has been overwhelmingly positive with families reporting greater confidence in their parenting and more settled babies, resulting in improved harmony and wellbeing. Our Time.
